"This image is a very special one for me. Not only was it the first time I landed one of my photos in a magazine spread, but it really shaped the way I approached documenting surfing. On this day, my trusty 400mm lens had broken, leaving me shooting with my 24-105mm. My instinct that early in my career was to always shoot zoomed in, tight action shots. However, on this day, I didn’t have that option and as a result I was forced to capture the whole crazy scene unfolding in front of me from a more removed perspective.

Something really clicked with me from that point. I became obsessed with pulling back the zoom to capture images that showed not just the world class waves and talent, but the bigger scenes, insanely beautiful locations and exotic atmospheres that were all around me. My aim became to invite the viewer in to hopefully feel like they were almost there with me."
