The Mentawai Islands, a small chain of islands and islets off the coast of Sumatra, have become legendary in the surf world over the past few decades. Home to dozens of the world's best breaks, the Mentawais have gone from one of surfing's best-kept secrets to a relatively popular destination for adventurous wave-riders.
Back in 2017, Portuguese pro surfer Nic Von Rupp headed to the Mentawais to see what all the fuss was about. After a few days of perfect barrels at Kandui, he was convinced that that the hype is well-deserved.
Kandui is one of Nics favourite spots around the globe, this hollow, fast, long barreling left fits right into his alley.
