Stephanie Gilmore is sweating on the results of an MRI scan this week to see if a fun session surfing will wipe out her bid to equal Layne Beachley’s record of seven world crowns this year.
The outcome of scans either late on Monday or on Tuesday will determine whether Gilmore will be surfing the next event of the world surf league in Rio next month after her bid for the Margaret River Pro crown came to a painful end thanks to a knee injury sustained in a free surf.
A distressed Gilmore has already been diagnosed with a fracture in her tibia but whether she also has ligament damage is still to be determined.
“I’ve injured my knee, I’ve got a little fracture in one of my bones. It’s a bit of a bummer,’’ said Gilmore who admitted yesterday she is in significant pain after hitting the sand straight-legged while surfing for fun.
“I don’t want to push it in case of further damage.’’

Gilmore said she is still hopeful she will be recovered in time to contest the next event of the world surf league in Rio from May 11s.
“Fractures aren’t as bad a ligaments so fingers crossed,’’ she said.
Many believe Gilmore is the only surfer in the world capable of not just equalling and exceeding Beachley’s record but also matching or bettering Kelly Slater’s 11 world crowns.
Missing two events this season would make her quest to match Beachley’s benchmark in 2015 almost an impossibility.
While Gilmore, her leg swathed in bandages, watched from the beach, Australians Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright snared two early berth in the quarter-finals of the Margaret River Pro.
The pair are the only two Australian surfers to advance into the quarter-finals with Fitzgibbons drawn against American Lakey Peterson in her quarter-final clash and Wright up against Courtney Conlogue.
