Wedding Cake's BIGGEST DAY

Video by SURFING VISIONS.
Autumn just keeps giving and this time its at home in Sydney. I just arrived back in Sydney from Tahiti the swell forecast was telling us that the ocean is going to erupt with some huge waves all focused directly into the Sydney City coastline (from Wollongong to Newcastle). What I did not expect is the surf to be as big as it got. Locals informed me that this swell is the biggest in decades. One Coogee local told me that their hasn't been a swell bigger since the one way back in 1974. So it was for sure an historic day to say the least and here is the evidence.

Nazare BOMBS we Love - Part 2

Tim Bonython - So here we go into Part 2 of those two big, big days documenting Nazare monster waves from the water.
This second day was guaranteed to deliver some very big waves and it didn’t disappoint. With the swell peaking over night we knew it would be game on as soon as we got out there.
All up the biggest wave of the day came when most went in.
For us we don’t go in until the show is well and truely over.
Only Justine Dupont & Nic Von Rupp stayed out as Nic wasn’t happy until he got what he wanted. What came in on first peak just after lunch was exactly what he was looking for.
For me i got to film the biggest wave surfed from the line up.
Also featuring on the day was world record holder for riding the biggest wave Sebastian Steudtner plus Pedro Scooby, Lucas Chumbo & Tony Laureano.

Nazare BOMBS we Love Pt 1

Tim Bonython "So up till now I have been in Portugal for 4 weeks. And its been PUMPING!
Sunday 5th & Monday 6th of November, Nazare had it first real big swell. 100% tow swell.
So with a head full of anxiety i had the option to shoot from the water off a jet-ski.
It’s the ultimate unique angle and for me i like to be unique.
Land is good but from the water its AMAZING.
Day one (part 1) is an afternoon on a building swell. Here you will see some truly HUGE waves.
Featuring world record holder for riding the biggest wave Sebastian Steudtner plus Pedro Scooby, Nic Von Rupp, Andrew Cotton, Lucas Chumbo & Mason Barnes."

After The Rain

Video from SURFING VISIONS.
After 5 days of torrential rain that left the east coast of Australia in the worst floods in a 100 years we knew that once the rains past that the Pacific ocean would create some beautiful waves. It was really about where the best place would be. This spot rarely breaks but when it does its one of those great waves that rates as one of the most dangerous. This slab of a wave breaks directly on a very shallow reef. If your game enough to ride this wave with one mistake could end up been your last.

AFTER THE RAIN FEATURES - Russell Bierke, Matt Dunsmore, Scott 'Whip" Dennis, Wayne Cleveland,  Jay Taplin, & Dylan Longbottom.

CAPE COVID - East Coast Low - Part 2 August 2020

As they say, leave the best till last. After 2 days of the East Coast getting battered by yet another East Coast low pressure system the surf went down from a peak of 10 meters plus (30 feet) to a chunky 8 to 12 feet.(3/4 meters) This day really showed who was the boss as there were victims a plenty.

The Cape loves a tow swell and this one didn't disappoint. Still at 8 feet the paddle option is very doable if your good.

But when the big ones come through the tow option is best as you will see here.

Stand out surfer was Max McGuigan on his backhand getting more & more confident every time he surfs out there. Then there was the usual pack showing us all how its done like Kirk Flintoff, Hayden Blair, Lucas Street & Kipp Caddy.
There was long time Cape/Ours legends Wayne Cleveland & Eddie “The Predator” Blackwell also taking on some of the bigger bombs.

All up this was an all time day! Sea for yourself!

THE BIG WAVE PROJECT

The Big Wave Project is a masterful, award-winning documentary on the art of big wave riding from veteran Australian surf filmmaker Tim Bonython. For five years, Tim followed a tight-knit crew of the world’s best big wave surfers as they each attempted a personal goal – to ride the world’s biggest wave.

Tim is allowed into the inner sanction of this ‘band of brothers’ as they vividly, and humbly, describe their motivations and fears, and display death-defying feats at the prime big wave locations around the world.

As Tim followed the core crew - featured surfers include Jamie Mitchell, Aaron Gold, Mark Healey, Ryan Hipwood, Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker and Billy Kemper - he realised they worked as a team and all had each other’s back. And Tim is there with his cameras when they are taken to the edge.

The narrative also includes the history of big wave surfing and how it developed from humble origins to modern tow-in and paddle surfing, with insights from aficionados Jamie Mitchell, Peter Mel and the legendary, late Brock Little.

After a sell-out Australian cinema tour this year, and a Best Action Documentary award at the Maui Film Festival, The Big Wave Project is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

The Big Wave Project is a 98-minute narrative that will scare viewers as much as it will exhilarate. “The danger level increases as we attempt to climb a mountain of water where the peak keeps getting higher,” says Alex Gray, one of the film’s participants.

The progression of the skill level of the big wave proponents coincides with the best swell season in 30 years as they paddle and tow into some of the greatest rides ever documented. This includes what has been called ‘the biggest wave ever attempted’ featuring Aaron Gold’s massive paddle-in wave at Pe’ahi (Jaws), in Hawaii.

Other locations include Nazaré (Portugal) - the home of the biggest rideable wave, The Right, Shipsterns and Pedra Branca (Australia), Cloudbreak (Fiji) and Teahupo’o (Tahiti).

To capture these breaks in their almost supernatural magnificence, for Tim it’s a labour of love pouring over weather maps as the ‘perfect storms’ manifest and then pinpointing where he needs to be in the world. The gigantic wave images by themselves are incredible, let alone seeing humans pit themselves against the immense power and majesty of the ocean.

Surfing legend Simon Anderson, inventor of the Thruster, said: “The Big Wave Project didn’t disappoint. The reaction of the people at the premiere screening said it all. I’ve never heard so many ohs and ahs in a cinema. A great insight to the inner sanctum of just about every big wave charger and big wave destination from around the globe. 5 Stars Tim.”

Leading Australian violinist, composer and conductor, Richard Tognetti, said: “Tim, your film is wonderful. Great structure, and the theme of death is really powerful.”

The Big Wave Project is directed by Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) award-winning cinematographer and multi-award winning surf film producer, Tim Bonython, who has four decades of experience in filming and documenting surfing.
