Nazare, Dancing with Monsters

Video by SURFING VISIONS.

Out of all the spots i have documented Nazare is most scary to film but at the same time it can be so rewarding. From the beginning on my first visit back in 2016 i was set up on the hill. There is a million spots to shoot from with a million other cameramen & women doing the same thing. So wanted something a little more exclusive. The water angle is it. Once your out there your nerves go into overdrive. You seriously need to trust your jet-ski driver. Dino Carmo is my man. Having being a professional bodyboarder and lived all his life at Nazare, Dino knows the Nazare line up like no other. Once your in the line up Dino puts you right deep inside where the moving mountains unload. He's incredibly focused and at all times constantly reassuring me that we are safe. It's so intense. Last season with the 25 days on the water this edit shows 14 minutes of my best vision.
I cant wait for my ninth season coming real soon. ENJOY!

Massive Monsters

Video by Tim Bonython | SURFING VISIONS.

So in this edit we feature my second home Nazare in Portugal. The home of the worlds largest ridable wave. Nazare is one of those places that you expect to see plenty of that kind of thing. 'Big Massive Monsters' as Pato Teixeira says.

This film is really a short documentary rather than a short clip.

I wanted to present a full wrap up of this historic day. Interviews before and after to really paint the story of how it was expected and and how it all went down.

On every big swell event there, if the storm is big enough and coming from the right direction and arrives with the right winds & weather there's a possible chance of riding the biggest wave ever ridden. Most of these surfing gladiators are after this moment.

A Guinness World Record is as good as World Title and to get it is for some is the pinnacle of the sport.

Since i recorded this vision a number of World Records have been suggested.

Nazare is really the ultimate test of man/women riding beast. It's the preparation, it's the timing, it's the team, it's the beat downs and with a bit of luck it's the adulation of riding the biggest wave of your life.

Leave a comment if can and let me know who you think rides the biggest wave.

This film shows this. Enjoy...

Nazare Biggest Swell of the Season | Nic Von Rupp

Photo: Margarita Salyak

Video by Nic Von Rupp.

2021 and 2022 has been a huge season for Nazaré, Massive swell after Massive Swell, Injuries after Injuries most of the tow teams have been swiped out including myself.. I was supposed to be out for the season due to a rib injury, but after seeing the Huge swell approaching Nazaré at 23ft at 21sec with perfect offshore winds, I knew it was a swell I couldn't miss out on, ribs were hurting, yet I felt like I needed to ignore that and just face the beast. So I called up Chumbo, he flew in from Hawaii and we made it happen.

NAZARE POST CONTEST SURF

Crowd, good energy, big waves... The Nazaré Challenge is back  to Nazaré! I'm super stoked to have shared this day with Pedro Scooby. I couldn't have asked for a better partner to have my back this day.. What a performance!!
You have all seen the footage of the Nazare Challenge, what you probably haven't seen is the day after, perfect 20ft conditions ideal to paddle.

Winter swells are back in Nazare

Nic von Rupp "Last week was insane at Nazaré, back to back swells in the 20-30ft range, we thought we were going to tow but it ended up being a all paddle swell with some big barrels in the mix.

Always dreamt about riding a huge barrel at Nazaré. It’s that one frontier that hasn’t been cracked properly at Nazaré. Everything came together on this day, 15-20ft perfect condition and I finally got what I was looking for a big barrel on a 10’4 board."

Water Footage Showreel 2021 / Nazaré, Portugal

When it comes to Nazare, there are only a few people on the planet who properly and intimately know that wave. It takes more than turning up for a few seasons to really get the nuance of the this juggernaut dialled in. It's not just 'hey it's big, let's surf'; there's so much more to the technical aspect and logistics and swell angles and storms, canyons, rescue, spotters and on and on.

It is perhaps one of surfing's most volatile mixes, a potent, ticking time bomb that can be more mountain than ocean at times. And isn'tthat what makes it all so compelling? Now, imagine growing up there. Imagine having Nazare as your local and learning all the intricacies that comes with it. Luis de Sa, aka Ben, from Above Media, is that legend. Not only born and raised at Nazare, he's surfed it a heck of a lot. But also, through that, has been scoping out angles to shoot that you may not have seen before.

18-year-old surfer may have broken the record for the biggest wave surfed in Nazaré

On October 29, 2020 Tony Laureano may have surfed a 30 meter wave, is now awaiting approval from the Guinness World Record.

Tony Laureano is the youngest Big Wave Surfer from Portugal. He started surfing when he was just 5 and grew up with a great influence of what was happening in Nazaré and all the Big Wave scene discovery in Portugal.

His father, Ramon Laureano is himself a Big Wave legend and Nazaré pioneer, a professional Jet Ski rescuer and responsible for some of the most hardcore rescue operations ever attempted in Praia do Norte.

Historical day for Foil surfing | Nazare

Foil from Nuno Dias

Nazare, 17th February 2020.

An historical day for Foil surfing. A board that reaches really high speeds and that seems to levitate the surface of the water.
The buoys were pointing to the largest swell of the winter hitting the deep canyon and some of the best big wave surfers were in town to catch the biggest waves in the world. Names like Laird Hamilton, Benny Ferris, Terry Chung, Luca Padua, Nuno Santos and Glyn Ovens were there changeling the massive conditions that afternoon. Somehow in the middle of the chaos, they were all ridding first peak, right in front of the cliff and setting the bar for the future of Foil surfing.

Nazare XXL - Historic "Epsilon" Swell!

Big wave season is open and professional surfers took advantage of gigantic waves as high as multistory buildings off the coast of Portugal.

Hurricane Epsilon created a massive North Atlantic swell which made for some of the biggest waves recorded in the coastal Portuguese town of Nazare, a world-famous big wave spot.

Hundreds of mask-wearing spectators gathered to watch surfers attempt to tame the waters in a location that generates record-breaking waves due to constructive interference generated by a deep underwater canyon that reaches 4.9 kilometers (3 miles) deep.

Wipeout . Russell Bierke . Raw Footage @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.11.07

This raw footage shows Australian Big Wave Surfer, Russell Bierke (21 ys old), charging one of the biggest waves of the day on the first peak at Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell.

Bierke’s manages to ride the most critical part of the wave but wipes out after the massive water explosion behind him, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath before the next wave impact.

The following rescue is performed by award wining Big Wave Surfer Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca from Brazil, riding a jetski Lucas is able to help Russell until he reaches the safety of the sand. This sequence was the main highlight of the day, during the biggest session of the season so far, with waves exceeding 60 ft on the face.

Bierke with an extensive experience in heavy waves and nasty wipeouts gave the following statement to filmmaker Pedro Miranda who captured this footage: “this was by far my longest hold down ever! I barely got a breath before the second wave landed on me. Felling pretty sore today, got a good whiplash when I skipped in front of the wave, but no injuries which is good” (…) “Felt like I could barely walk up the beach when Igot there”. Russell Bierke is one of the most respected young talents in the Big Wave Surfing world, he won the mythical “Red Bull Cape Fear”in 2016 with just 19 ys old, one of the most extreme and dangerous events in the sport. This was the first time Bierke surfed the infamous giant waves of Nazaré in Portugal, the locals applauded his “go for it" attitude after this wave, joking with “Welcome to Naza, Russell Bierke!”, since it’s kind of a tradition Big Wave surfers to get a huge beating during their first session in Nazaré, usually regarded as a good luck sign.

Drone video shows slacklining above giant waves in Nazare

A slackliner cuts a lonely figure walking above monster waves in Nazaré, Portugal, in this stunning drone footage.

A group of slackliners called the Western Riders recently installed a line connecting the Cliff of Praia do Norte in Nazaré to the Guilhim Rock, a famous landmark known from viral photos of huge wave impacts and water explosions during the Portuguese Big Wave Season.

The slackliner on this video is Emerson Machado, 28-year-old from Brazil. According to Machado, the line was installed days before a big swell arrived in Nazaré, and everything was cautiously planned, checked and re-checked to provide the maximum level of security possible to the slackliners performing the walk. “It’s calculated risk, we are not crazy like it may seem at first sight.

In reality, everything was planned to the minor details. Over the years, we’ve performed walks in many locations, including Nazaré, and we take this very seriously,” Machado said. “Over the course of two days, we’ve performed dozens of walks between the cliff and the rock in Nazaré, and no one was ever injured during that time. It’s relatively safe when performed by an experienced crew, working together with planning and caution,” he adds.

This extreme sport is called slacklining, although this version performed in Praia do Norte is known more specifically as highlining. It involves balancing on a rope suspended above the ground (or above the sea in this case) and anchored between two points. It looks like a sport made for daredevils, but well-trained slackliners believe all the gear and equipment they use is all made, tested and certificated for this activity, making it perfectly safe.
