How To Train Like a Pro Surfer

Back in the day – like 10 years ago – surfers didn’t train much outside of, well, surfing.

You wanna workout? Go surf. You wanna improve your surfing? Go surf. You wanna get stronger? GO SURF. But things are different today. Most pro surfers will train, outside of the water, in order to enhance their game in the water.

But what does a surfer specific workout look like? Former Championship Tour surfer, Frederico Morais, recently shared his program:

Captioning the post, and breaking down the workout, Morais wrote:

How to train like a pro surfer!

I start my sessions with some flexibility, mobility & core activation drills.

Today I did:

Single leg power glute bridge w/ chest press:

3 x 5r w/ 20kg each dumbbell

Hip thrust:

8 x 100kg

3x 6r 140kg

Trap bar squat

3 x 5r 90kg

Squat jump

4 x 5r 10kg each dumbbell

Core strength

3 x 8 rotations each side w/10kg slam ball

And I finished w/ barbell row

5 x 10r 50kg

So, you wanna get better at surfing? Go surf…hit the gym. (And then go surfing.)

THICK and HEAVY

Like all directors, Bruno and Mariana Dias took advantage of the confinement to favor editing and not filming, and thus make a small order in their files. And it is with this retrospective that they can allow themselves to affirm that these two minutes of "heavy and thick" waves represent Portugal in its best light.

We can only agree when we see these perfectly offshore conditions that inflate sometimes violent barrels in the best Portuguese locations. Vanlife Productions' cameras immortalized the elite of Portuguese surfing with Frederico Morais, Nic Von Rupp or Rafael Tapia, as well as prestigious guests like Tom Lowe or Kanoa Igarashi. And you, would you have surfed or filmed?

The Rise of Frederico Morais: Athlete Profile

The Rise of Frederico Morais: Athlete Profile

While Frederico Morais made quite an impact last year, he maintains all the trappings of a hidden threat. He thrives in the shadows. Growing up in Portugal, he was pretty far removed from the epicenter of European surfing power in France. But while he's spent much of his career outside the limelight, he spent a good chunk of last year turning doubters into believers. Frederico Morais is ready for prime time.

Frederico Morais | Post-Classic

Frederico Morais | Post-Classic from Frederico Morais
"If you intend to represent some kind of modernity, you should start through the classics."

PostScript:
History knowledge told us that every substantial expression of modernity, results from a skillful understanding of the classical principles. It´s been like that in music, dancing, fine arts, literature…
It´s been like that every time a Man uses their capacity to perform some kind of self expression and interpretation of nature and reality.
It seems that´s what surf is all about…
