Reigning surfing world champion Tyler Wright has revealed she nearly quit the championship tour after her brother Owen Wright was seriously injured during a warm-up surf at Pipeline in Hawaii. At 21, Tyler became her brother’s primary carer. She felt at a crossroads: should she quit the tour to be by her brother’s side, or leave him to chase her dream of the world title?

Ladies Of The Sea - Tyler Wright

Surfers have, for a long time, dedicated their lives to harvesting the ocean’s beauty, viewing it from different angles, conquering its dangerousness, or appreciating its peacefulness. They’ve seen more sunsets, rain squalls, bait balls, cyclones and coastlines than anyone, and relish it’s innate unpredictability in a kind of ‘dance’ with nature.

There’s nothing quite like watching a women surf… The style, flow and elegance of a talented surfer, as she draws unique lines on an untouched wave-face, is more ‘divine pursuit’ than ‘pastime’.

So, with so much noise out there highlighting the competitive, mechanical side of surfing, we wanted to create a series that illustrates how we feel about these Ladies of the Sea! Welcome to Episode 2, featuring Tyler Wright, filmed by Wade Carroll and proudly presented by Rip Curl.

The Search

Over the years, Rip Curl’s flagship Search boat the Quest 1 had been a home away from home to the Rip Curl girls, but alas, she is no more. Earlier this year she unfortunately sunk – just a week before the girls were due to go on a Search trip.
