Venturing Deep Into Iceland's Remote Wave Country | Chasing The Shot

Filmmakers Mike Bromley and Ryan Meichtry follow the Icelandic duo, photographer Elli Thor Magnusson and pro surfer Heidar Logi, into the deepest parts of Iceland's frozen wave country, along with international pros Conor Maguire, Natxo Gonzalez, Russell Bierke, and Noah Wegrich. On surf trips like this, it's as much about the epic waves you score as it is about the adventure getting there and the company along the way. Don't miss one of the year's best far-flung surf explorations.

Wipeout . Russell Bierke . Raw Footage @ Nazaré, Portugal - 2018.11.07

This raw footage shows Australian Big Wave Surfer, Russell Bierke (21 ys old), charging one of the biggest waves of the day on the first peak at Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell.

Bierke’s manages to ride the most critical part of the wave but wipes out after the massive water explosion behind him, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath before the next wave impact.

The following rescue is performed by award wining Big Wave Surfer Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca from Brazil, riding a jetski Lucas is able to help Russell until he reaches the safety of the sand. This sequence was the main highlight of the day, during the biggest session of the season so far, with waves exceeding 60 ft on the face.

Bierke with an extensive experience in heavy waves and nasty wipeouts gave the following statement to filmmaker Pedro Miranda who captured this footage: “this was by far my longest hold down ever! I barely got a breath before the second wave landed on me. Felling pretty sore today, got a good whiplash when I skipped in front of the wave, but no injuries which is good” (…) “Felt like I could barely walk up the beach when Igot there”. Russell Bierke is one of the most respected young talents in the Big Wave Surfing world, he won the mythical “Red Bull Cape Fear”in 2016 with just 19 ys old, one of the most extreme and dangerous events in the sport. This was the first time Bierke surfed the infamous giant waves of Nazaré in Portugal, the locals applauded his “go for it" attitude after this wave, joking with “Welcome to Naza, Russell Bierke!”, since it’s kind of a tradition Big Wave surfers to get a huge beating during their first session in Nazaré, usually regarded as a good luck sign.

Russell Bierke Battles a Heavy Day at Shipstern Bluff | Sessions

Video from Red Bull

Up-and-coming Australian madman Russell Bierke is tackling the world one crazy wave at a time. You might
remember him as the precocious 18-year-old who won Cape Fear in 2016.

The son of Hawaiian big wave surfer Kirk Bierke, Russell never had a choice, from a young age it was always
charge hard or charge home, and that's just what he's done.

Growing up on Australia's South Coast meant growing up on a diet of raw ocean energy, the Pacific endlessly broadsiding his hometown of Ulladulla and its plethora of shallow reef slabs and deep water bombies with
swell...and it doesn't get much gnarlier than a big 'ol day at his local shallow reef slab Shipstern Bluff.

Click play and watch Bierke battle a massive day at Shippies.

Thrill to Russell Bierke’s Shipstern sessions

You might remember Russell Bierke as the precocious 18-year-old who won Cape Fear in 2016. The son of Hawaiian big wave surfer Kirk Bierke, Russell never had a choice, from a young age it was always charge hard or charge home, and that's just what he's done.

Growing up on Australia's South Coast meant growing up on a diet of raw ocean energy, the Pacific endlessly broadsiding his hometown of Ulladulla and its plethora of shallow reef slabs and deep water bombies with swell.

Away from the maddening crowds of Sydney and with an endless supply of heavy waves, Russ has staked a strong claim to be his age group's heavy water champion of the world, and can count a handful of teenage Tahitian and Hawaiian madmen as his only peers, as his stunning video resumé will attest.

Hot on the heels of the 2016 win that put his name on the minds of surfers around the globe, Russell snuck off on an Australian big wave rite of passage to Tasmania's notorious Shipstern Bluff, a mission that was as humbling as it was rewarding.

With equally-talented filmer Steve Wall joining him on his voyage to Van Diemen's Land, the edit above, of a young charger finding his place in the world, came to be, and it's our pleasure to bring it you now. Jump on board and hit play, we hope you enjoy the ride.

Bezerke

O’Neill is proud to present Bezerke, a captivating short film that looks into the life of O’Neill team rider, Russell Bierke.

Russell isn’t your average eighteen-year-old Australian kid. He is leading the way for the next generation of big wave surfers. Tracing his love of heavy waves from childhood to the present day, Bezerke showcases the surfing of a levelheaded young man that sees challenge where most only see terror.

Bezerke features insight from Russell’s father, and also includes scenes from eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater who shared a special session in Southern Australia with Russell when he was fifteen. Bezerke documents Russell’s phenomenal Cape Fear event win and his thoughts on the future of big wave surfing.

Teahupoo Huge XXL Waves July 2015 Drone Footage

In July 2015 a massive swell hit Teahupoo, Tahiti in French Polynesia. This swell created massive 30 foot waves, surfing by Raimana, Matahi Drollet, Niccolo Porcella, Matehau Tetopata, Oliver Kurtz, Russell Bierke and more. This aerial video was filmed with a DJI Inspire and Phantom 3. Teahupoo is one of the most powerful and deadly waves on the planet, and breaks over a shallow reef, creating a below sea level effect. "Teahupoo" loosely translates to "place of skulls". Shot in 4K, hopefully Vimeo will include 4K options in the future.
