Ain't No Wave Pool - Mick Fanning on #TheSearch by Rip Curl

Video from Rip Curl

What if I told you there was an unknown sand-bottom right that is five kilometres long, breaks 20 metres off the beach, holds six foot of swell and has only been surfed by four people on the entire planet?

Would you believe me?

What if good-ol’-having-a-year-off-Mick Fanning was one of those surfers, and he told you that this wave had him haulin’ arse like an F1 driver down a strip of sand that never seemed to end.

Would you believe him?

This ain't no fucking wave pool! This is the real world. This is The Snake.

Mick Fanning's Irish Crossroads

Video from Rip Curl

For the past two decades, Mick Fanning has collected homes all over the world – returning to the same places, the same towns, the same waves, each year on the World Tour. Making friends. Becoming family.

But one place has always held a special place for Mick, and it's a place that the World Tour didn't take him to.

Ireland. Ireland is where Mick's family is from. A tiny, modest town in the north is where his dad was raised. And it's where he feels his roots.

So on his year sabbatical from the tour, while he was taking time to try to reset – to get back to the basics and get to know himself again – it only made sense that he returned to the land of the Irish.

Because as you're reading this, he's facing one of the hardest choices of his life.

Join Mick Fanning, as he goes home... and faces the Irish Crossroads.

Meet Barney Miller, a quadriplegic surfer who inspires Mick Fanning

Growing up on the beaches of Sawtell, Australia, Barney Miller dreamt of a life as a professional surfer.

When Gold Coast world surfing champion Mick Fanning says someone inspires him, they must be impressive.

Meet Barney Miller, who Fanning, one of surfing’s toughest competitors, lauds as one of the strongest people he knows.

Mr Miller, 37, has spent 17 years defying medical expectations after a car he was a passenger in smashed into a tree at 120km/h.

He went from aspiring pro surfer to months in intensive care and spinal units with doctors telling him he would never breathe unassisted or use his right arm or legs.

Now, he not only breathes on his own, but can stand and is even back in the ocean pursuing his passion for surfing.

He also hopes to start a family with longtime partner Kate Miller — they delayed the wedding until last year so he could stand at the service.

"It's up to other people to remember you how they want to remember you. For me, it's more about, when I do walk away, I want to be happy."

What a year for Mick! This year we had the opportunity to get to know this legend a bit better. His resilience and determination blew everyone's mind. An inspiration to us all.
