PERFECT WAVES IN ERICEIRA | Nic von Rupp

A film by Von Rupp Media.

I would like to present to you the second episode of Portugal Back to Back the new series inside of the Von Froth channel that will bring to you waves, stories, and good times from north to south of Portugal.

In this episode, I take you on a tour around Ericeira, a town known for its world class waves, on a day with absolutely pumping offshore barrels where I alongside Frederico Morais, Aritz Aranburu and Gony Zubizarreta scored some crazy waves in Ericeira.

Ericeira is the first European World Surfing Reserve for well more than one reason. If seven waves are identified as making up the Reserve, there are at least a dozen more worth riding spread around these seven jewels.

Portuguese surfer girl rescued from the rocks during the WSl competition in Portugal

Portuguese surfer Teresa Bonvalot had a scare this Thursday (07/10/21) in Portugal, the day of her 22nd birthday. In the last dispute of the day in a competition in Ericeira, the Portuguese caught a wave and stopped very close to the rocks. The waves did not stop heading towards it, which ended up being thrown on the rocks of Ribeira D'Ilhas beach. Luckily nothing serious happened and she ran back to the sea, but lost the match and was eliminated from the competition.

Ericeira, a small fishing village north of Lisbon on the Portuguese coast, is also a world-class surfing town. People come from as far away as Australia for great waves, good seafood and a relaxed "old Portugal" feeling that persists even as its popularity grows. Monocle films pays a visit to the surf haven this summer.

Ruben Gonzalez|Wave of the Future

One of the most attractive big waves in Europe. Ruben Gonzalez in the cockpit.

"When we were kids, me, Tiago Pires and other locals imagined one day surfing that wave," tells Portugal's Ruben Gonzalez. "We were grommets, too afraid to make that challenge so we'd say to each other, Yeah! One day we'll surf that and make incredible barrels! That's the wave of the future."
