Heavy Indo Reef Fires Up

While technically part of Desert Point, the aptly named Grower section is essentially a surf spot in its own right. When it's on, it breaks pipe-esque over dangerously shallow coral reef, and it has to be up there as one of the heaviest waves in the whole of Indo. While the rest of the point is heaving with surfers, not many people are usually taking this place on.

Pandemic Lembongan

Short One - Lembongan | It’s hard to see Lembongan that empty.
All stores are closed, beaches are empty and hotels are slowly turning into abandoned buildings. It is clearly visible: covid has changed everyone’s life here.
Countless residents are struggling to survive during this pandemic.

The more it touched my heart to see the locals having the biggest smiles on their faces surfing THEIR spots together.

It is just incredible how much joy the ocean can bring to everyone’s life.

A Lady Log Morning - Bali

The ladies turned up in numbers for this session at Batu Bolong the other day, and with a small swell running it was a perfect size for a bit of logging.

The tide was extremely low early on, but it filled in quickly, with some rides linking up all the way to the inside. The smooth conditions didn't hang in there too long, with the onshore already showing itself by late morning.

Giant Waves At Uluwatu - Surfing Bali, 2021

Thumbnail is at 6:08. A very solid West swell brought all of Bali's big-wave chargers out of the woodwork, and down to Uluwatu for a memorable afternoon session.

Most of the action was at Outside Corner, and as the tide dropped out a decent amount of surfers headed out there to try their luck. Everyone put on a good show, and we were treated to some amazing rides, epic wipeouts, and broken boards galore.

This video features land & drone footage. Enjoy!

Disappearing Act At Remote Reef - 23 November 2020

Video by Surfers of Bali

This isn't the most reliable wave in terms of shape, but it can pack a decent punch when most of Bali is dibbling it in. For all the decent ones, there's plenty of sketchy waves like the first few of the clip.

The wind is finally swinging around to the west, which is what we expect for this time of year. There's still waves to be had, but there's more driving involved for most surfers and more rights for all the natural footers that like a bit of front-side action.

Some of the surfers featured in this video...
Ryuki Waida
Al Cleland Jr
Sakura
Sierra Kerr
Luana Silva

Wave Of The Day (Opening Scene) - Keramas, 15 November 2020

Video from Surfers of Bali

There were a few nice waves at Keramas yesterday morning with a pretty solid crew of local shredders turning up for it. But it was fifteen year old Hawaiian, Sakura who managed to snag the wave of the day (first wave of this video) - a perfectly read barrel followed by a couple of turns sealed the deal. There weren't a whole lot of tubes, but the conditions stayed smooth all morning with plenty of shapely walls just asking for it.

Bali Surf Journal - October 2020

Regarded as the final month of the dry season, October 2020 followed the script more or less.

There were plenty of medium sized swells, and although the SE trade wind didn't blow as hard as it can do, it made an appearance every day. That's a good combo for the left reefs on the Bukit, with Uluwatu particularly benefiting.

Compared to other years, there weren't too many clean mornings on Bali's East coast, but Keramas still managed to provide a couple of standout sessions.

Kelly Slater X 11 - Keramas, 18 September 2020

The wind was already starting to ruffle the smooth morning conditions when Kelly turned up to Bali's favourite right.

Maybe he was trying to avoid the early morning traffic? There were less people in the water by the time he hit the lineup and he did catch a bunch of waves in a relatively short period of time.

Here's 11 of those waves from number 11.

The Best Backhand* Surfing I've Seen At Uluwatu - Made Lana

Video from Surfers of Bali

Born and raised in Uluwatu, surfing at his home break Made Lana is easily recognizable. A buttery smooth style without compromising any power, he seamlessly strings together heavy-footed turns and barrels without wasting any part of the wave.

He started surfing at 14, and feels like he’s surfing better than ever now at the age of 44 – putting it down to having better boards these days.

He’s owned/operated the Edge Bar on the Uluwatu cliff for the last 10 years, citing help from others rather than his own efforts in getting the business off the ground. And so, an underlying humility seems to be a running theme with Made Lana, but no amount of downplaying can disguise his achievements both in and out of the water.

*I say it's the best backhand that I've seen at Uluwatu, but it actually covers any surfing I've witnessed there.

VIEWS FROM BALI | Ezekiel Lau

The sweltering heat hit us as soon as we got off the plane in the land of palm trees and black-sand beaches. As a remedy for sweat-drenched shirts at dinner and the instant regret that came with stepping out of the hotel room and its heavenly air-conditioning units, Zeke Lau threw buckets of salt water skyward and found the perfect hideaway right in the barrels of Bali's reef-breaks. "Views from Bali" brings you power, ferocity, precision and drum-roll… Rihanna? You’ll see.
