Nazare Paddling Monsters - Part 1

I’ve spent a lot of time shooting Nazare and now I’m in the water shooting off a jetski including that definitive unique water angle. So here i concentrate on some of my best paddle waves shot this year. With the best surfers who actually put their courage to the test to paddle into some of the biggest waves on the planet with some serious consequences.
Here’s Part 1 of a three part series. Enjoy!
Special thanks to Dino Carmo and Diogo Pedro
from Nazare Jet.. for putting me in the spot to get the shot.

Nazare BOMBS we Love - Part 2

Tim Bonython - So here we go into Part 2 of those two big, big days documenting Nazare monster waves from the water.
This second day was guaranteed to deliver some very big waves and it didn’t disappoint. With the swell peaking over night we knew it would be game on as soon as we got out there.
All up the biggest wave of the day came when most went in.
For us we don’t go in until the show is well and truely over.
Only Justine Dupont & Nic Von Rupp stayed out as Nic wasn’t happy until he got what he wanted. What came in on first peak just after lunch was exactly what he was looking for.
For me i got to film the biggest wave surfed from the line up.
Also featuring on the day was world record holder for riding the biggest wave Sebastian Steudtner plus Pedro Scooby, Lucas Chumbo & Tony Laureano.

NAZARE Tow-Foiling Mission!!!

Welcome back to another video, last week in Portugal was a lot of dun, hanging out with good friend Glyn Ovens to learn what big wave hydrofoil surfing is all about at the legendary surf break of Nazare. Putting my equipment to the ultimate test with some speed, working on my wave riding and getting to grips with riding some giants. This wasn't the biggest day that we had, but you will have to wait a few more weeks before that video drops...

Yesterday, dramatic moment in Nazaré

Yesterday, you already know that Nazare got wild, big seas and high winds, just about anything can happen. A ski piloted by Alemao de Maresias, with Andrew Cotton on the back, got clipped near the cliffs of gigantic Nazare, which ended up bucking both of these legends into a pretty dire situation.

The tension was maximum, but both managed to be rescued. What a scare this was.

It's official, the liquid mountain of Nazare has awakened.

It's been years since the North Atlantic looked like this, two back-to-back storms (one, the remains of Hurricane Epsilon) are setting off just about everywhere in western Europe,a nd will continue to do so for the next few days. The smallest storm landed in the UK over the weekend and sent a XL swell pulse down to Portugal yesterday afternoon, as captured throughout this feature by master lensman Helio Antonio.

Epic Big Wave Surf Foiling in Nazare w/ Laird Hamiton

Moving at a speed where your mind slows things down to gain control... In early 2020 Laird Hamilton, Terry Chung, Luca Padua and Benny Ferris were out with top surfers across the globe in Nazare Portugal to surf waves that come about rarely, if ever.   After extensive experimentation with setups and technique, this group was going to go after the breaks in Nazare in a different way, on surf foils that allow for an unreal speed on the water and an entirely new experience.  Documented by Patrick Wieland, on custom classic foils engineered by the team at Lift Foils.

Wipeout & Heroic Rescue at Nazare

Recently released raw footage shows Portuguese big wave surfer and airline pilot, Salvador Villas Boas (51 ys old) charging one of the biggest waves of the day on the first peak at Nazaré during a monster swell in February 2019. Salvador rides the wave until a bump makes him fall of his board on the most dangerous zone of Praia do Norte near the rocks and impact zone. The wipeout was gruesome, with Salvador hitting the water at nearly 50mph, the whole scene resembled a car accident and in a few seconds after first impact, Salvador is pulled back over the falls and hits the water a second time, suffering an extensive hold down period before finally resurfacing. The moments that followed the wipeout were a matter of life and dead, this wave was not the last wave of the Set, there was more to come and Salvador’s position on impact zone and near the rocks demanded immediate rescue. This is when Ramon Laureano, a Portuguese-Brazilian professional Jetski Rescuer comes into play, he had been following Salvador from behind the wave, and knew the situation demanded a rescue on first attempt. In normal circumstances, this rescue would’ve been made after a second wave, but Ramon knew the potential implications of Salvador getting caught in the impact zone, and attempted the rescue anyway in the short window of opportunity he got. He successfully picks up Salvador at the very last second, and speeds up away from the area, while avoiding being swallowed by the giant wall of white water. This ended up happening a few moments later with his Jetski being capsized by white water, but on a very different area of Praia do Norte, away from the rocks and much closer to the beach. Both Salvador and Ramon were able to swim back safely to the beach, where the jetski was already “parked”. No injuries reported in what was one of the most spectacular rescue operations of this season in Nazaré. Pedro Miranda, the filmmaker who captured this footage added: “This rescue in particular was truly one of the most heroic moments I witnessed out there” (…) “with more than 20 years of big wave experience, Ramon performed one of the most difficult rescues one can attempt in Nazaré” (…) “to pickup someone directly on the first peak’s impact zone between set waves, is something you don’t see everyday here. Ramon was a real hero, no doubt!" Ramon Laureano (46 ys) is a Portuguese-Brazilian Professional Jetski Rescuer with more than 20 years of Big Wave surfing experience, he runs “Jet Resgate Portugal” which provides rescue and tow-in services for big wave surfers, along with educational courses in rescue and safety. Salvador Villas Boas (51 ys) is an experienced veteran surfer and a commercial airline pilot, currently active in the Nazaré big wave scene, as part of his passion for big wave surfing.

Huge Storm Swell Hits Nazare - RAW FOOTAGE

January 1, 2019

This was a big day here in Nazare. The best in the business were in attendance for this banger. The swell direction shifted a little over night, and was projected to be one of the biggest swells Nazare had seen in years. However, it had a little too much south mixed in there, and damped the magnitude slightly. BUT, Peaks 4 through 10 were cranking!!!

How one break in Portugal creates the world's largest waves

Big Wave Tour Nazaré Challenge 2018 | Photo: Nando Jorge Photos

Nazaré is well known for good reason. It regularly produces the largest rideable waves on planet Earth. And thanks to the ultimate deepwater canyon set up, Nazaré’s surf size potential is only bound by the size and direction of the swell it receives.

For Nazaré, there is a steep contrast between the large and deep canyon running offshore and the much shallower ridge that lines the northern slope. This canyon/ridge relationship extends a long distance far offshore all the way up to the break.

The portion of the swell running through the deep canyon maintains a greater percentage of its raw open ocean energy and forward speed closer to shore. And upon interacting with the adjacent ridge, much of this energy will refract out of the canyon and focus back in toward the break.
